Guide

The index rose on 15 October. Asia–Europe moved first.

On 15 October 2026 Drewry’s World Container Index rose 3% to $4,485 per 40-foot container, after three weekly falls. Shanghai to Rotterdam rose 6% to $3,522 and Shanghai to Genoa rose 7% to $3,945, the first Asia–Europe rise after 13 down weeks. Shanghai to Los Angeles rose 3% to $7,884, and Shanghai to New York fell 1% to $10,075. Carriers have announced Asia–Europe FAK rates of $4,500–$4,800 per 40-foot from 19 October; Drewry calls their success uncertain because Suez transits and fewer blank sailings are adding capacity. Those figures are Drewry’s, for that Thursday. A quote for your cargo is a separate number.

Questions shippers ask

Should I book Europe cargo before 19 October?

If the cargo is ready and the sailing fits, it is worth asking for a rate before the announced FAK date. Whether the increase holds is uncertain on Drewry’s reading, because capacity is rising. Send the ready date and the port; the reply names the rate validity.

Can I book the Drewry number?

No. It is a market index for a 40-foot container on named routes, published by Drewry for 15 October 2026. Your file has a commodity, a weight, a port, and a week. The desk quotes that.

Where is the previous week?

Earlier weeks are on /insights/container-freight-rate-index/, including the 8 October note. Each note keeps the figures for its own date.
