Guide

DPU, DAP, and DDP: same door address, different customs and unload duties.

Under Incoterms 2020, DAP and DPU both deliver to a named place abroad with the seller paying main carriage, but DPU adds unloading at that place while DAP leaves unloading to the buyer. DDP goes further: the seller clears import and pays duty and VAT or GST, which requires an importer of record in the destination country. CIF and CIP include insurance to the port or first carrier, not automatic door delivery. Yihang Shipping quotes door moves from China on the term you name; ask whether DDP is available for your destination before you promise it to your buyer.

Trucks at a warehouse for inland delivery

How do EXW, FCA, and FOB differ from door terms?

  • EXW: risk transfers at the seller’s premises; the buyer arranges pickup, export, and everything after. A quote for EXW plus door-to-door pickup from a factory in China is still possible if Yihang arranges the truck from the named address.
  • FCA: seller delivers cleared for export to the carrier at a named place (often the port CY or an inland terminal).
  • FOB (sea only): seller delivers on board the vessel at the named port; buyer pays ocean freight and import side.
  • CIF/CIP: seller pays freight (and insurance on CIF/CIP) to the destination port or place, but risk follows the Incoterm chart; import clearance stays with the buyer unless you add DAP, DPU, or DDP.
  • Door-to-door is a service description; always pair it with an Incoterm so customs and duty responsibility are clear.

What does DAP from China include?

  • Seller (exporter) pays: inland in China, export clearance, main carriage to the named place abroad, and delivery to that address.
  • Risk transfers when the goods are ready for unloading at the named place.
  • Buyer pays: unloading (unless separately agreed), import clearance, import duty, VAT/GST, and any local fees.
  • Importer of record is normally the buyer; the buyer’s tax ID or equivalent is used at customs.
  • Typical inquiries: DAP to Italy, Poland, or Australia with pallets delivered to a warehouse door.

What does DPU from China include?

  • Same cost split as DAP for carriage and import taxes, but the seller also unloads at the named place.
  • Use DPU when the consignee has no forklift or crane at the site, for example solar kits to a town inland from Callao with unloading at Huacho.
  • Name the exact address and ground conditions; tail-lift or crane is priced separately if needed.
  • Insurance is not automatic under DPU; ask for a CIP-style policy or a separate cargo insurance file.

What does DDP from China include?

  • Seller pays delivery, import clearance, duty, and VAT/GST unless excluded in the contract.
  • Requires a party that can legally act as importer in the destination (EORI in the EU, VAT registration in many countries, or an approved IOR service).
  • DDP to France or other EU markets is often requested by e-commerce shippers; availability depends on product, value, and registration.
  • Yihang offers DDP to most major destinations. Availability is confirmed per lane, country, and product on each quote, after the HS code, value, and consignee details are checked.
  • For EU and UK door deliveries, Yihang can help with EORI and local import registration so the shipment has a valid importer of record.
  • Misusing DDP without registration is a common source of held cargo and refused entries.

How do DPU, DAP, and DDP compare?

  • Carriage to named place abroad: paid by seller under all three (unlike EXW or FOB).
  • Unloading at consignee: DPU = seller; DAP = buyer; DDP = seller (same unload duty as DPU unless contract says otherwise).
  • Import clearance: DAP/DPU = buyer; DDP = seller.
  • Import duty and VAT/GST: DAP/DPU = buyer; DDP = seller.
  • Risk transfer: DAP/DPU at named place ready for unload; DDP when goods are available to the buyer after import clearance (per ICC chart).
  • Insurance: not included unless CIP/CIF or a separate policy is agreed.

How does insurance fit: CIF/CIP vs door terms?

  • CIF (sea) and CIP (any mode) require the seller to buy minimum insurance to the destination named in the contract, but coverage level is limited unless you specify more.
  • DAP, DPU, and DDP do not include insurance by default; add cargo insurance with the insured value and clause you need.
  • For solar kits or high-value equipment, name whether cover should start at the factory or at the port.
  • Claims need consistent descriptions across invoice, packing list, and policy.

Who is the importer of record, and what registrations matter?

  • The importer of record is the entity customs holds responsible for the entry, duty, and VAT.
  • EU and UK deliveries often need an EORI or equivalent identifier on the entry.
  • Australia and New Zealand require the consignee’s customs client or importer number for many entries.
  • DDP from China only works if the seller or their partner holds valid registration for that product category.
  • Yihang coordinates clearance through trusted local partners; the quote states who files the entry.

What should I send for a door-delivery quote from China?

  • Full pickup address in China and full delivery address abroad, with postal code.
  • Incoterm requested (DAP, DPU, DDP, or EXW with door pickup).
  • Commodity, HS code if known, pallet or crate sizes, gross weight, and stackable or not.
  • Commercial value for insurance and customs planning.
  • Whether the consignee can unload (forklift, crane, tail-lift) or needs seller unload (DPU).
  • For DDP: product type, intended use, and whether you already have VAT/EORI in the destination country.

What are common Incoterm mistakes on China exports?

  • Quoting DDP without checking registration and product restrictions.
  • Writing ‘door to door’ on a proforma but leaving duty unpaid with no named importer.
  • Assuming DAP includes unloading; it does not unless you switch to DPU or add a separate unload line.
  • Using FOB for a shipment that still needs inland trucking in China to the port without stating it.
  • Skipping insurance on DAP because ‘the seller already shipped it’.
  • Giving only a city name instead of a street address for inland legs (Callao vs Huacho, port vs door).

How do I choose between DPU, DAP, and DDP?

  • Choose DAP when the buyer has import registration and unloading equipment and wants control of customs.
  • Choose DPU when the buyer lacks unload gear or you want one invoice that includes unload at site.
  • Choose DDP only when import registration and duty payment are confirmed for that product and country; ask Yihang first.
  • Choose EXW plus arranged pickup when the buyer’s forwarder controls export but you still need a truck from the factory.
  • Pair any choice with the door-to-door solution scope so legs are listed on the quote.

Questions shippers ask

What is the difference between DPU and DAP?

Under Incoterms 2020, both deliver to a named place with the seller paying main carriage. DPU adds unloading at that place; under DAP the buyer unloads. Import clearance and taxes stay with the buyer unless you use DDP.

Does DAP include import duty and VAT?

No. The buyer clears customs and pays duty and VAT or GST. The seller pays to bring the goods to the named place only.

Can Yihang quote DPU with insurance for solar kits to Peru?

Yes as separate lines: DPU for carriage and unload, plus cargo insurance if you send the insured value. Clearance and Peruvian taxes remain with the buyer under DPU unless you agree DDP.

Is DDP to France available from China?

Yes, DDP is available to France and most major destinations, confirmed per lane and product on the quote. DDP needs a valid importer of record; for EU and UK deliveries Yihang can help with EORI and local registration. Send the HS code, invoice value, and delivery address.

How is EXW door-to-door to Australia or Dubai different from DAP?

EXW leaves export and main carriage with the buyer once risk passes at the factory. Yihang can still quote pickup and subsequent legs if you list them. DAP puts main carriage and delivery on the seller through to the named address abroad.

Is door-to-door the same as DDP?

No. Door-to-door describes coordinated legs; DDP is an Incoterm where the seller pays import duty and VAT. See the door-to-door solution page and name the Incoterm on the quote.

Does CIF include delivery to my warehouse?

No. CIF includes sea freight and minimum insurance to the destination port named in the contract, not trucking after clearance. Use DAP or DPU for door delivery after import.

What is an importer of record?

The legal entity responsible for filing the import entry and paying duty and tax. For DDP, the seller or their partner must be able to act in that role.

Does this page publish freight rates?

No. Incoterms describe cost and risk split; the rate is quoted per shipment.
