Asia–Europe

  • Shanghai–Rotterdam up 3% to $3,632 and Shanghai–Genoa up 5% to $4,152, per 40-foot, on Drewry’s measure
  • Blank sailings for next week: 8, up from 2 this week. Drewry reads that as tighter capacity and expects a slight rate increase next week
  • Industry reporting had SCFI Shanghai–North Europe at $3,547 per 40-foot and Shanghai–Med at $4,097 the previous week; announced FAK levels from 1 November are $4,500 per 40-foot to North Europe and about $4,900–5,200 to the Mediterranean, with analysts doubting the full November increase will hold
  • Europe-bound cargo from China: the lane planner on /lanes/china-to-europe/ is a planning window; the number on the quote is for your sailing week, not the index
  • German-language routing notes sit on /de/seefracht-china-deutschland/ if the consignee reads German

Transpacific

  • Shanghai–Los Angeles up 2% to $8,007 and Shanghai–New York up 1% to $10,166
  • Blank sailings for next week: 2, down from 6. Drewry expects rates to stay stable on strong US import demand
  • Reporting for this week says the US peak season is wrapping up; Xeneta expects US trades to soften through the rest of 2026 after peaking
  • US-bound files: confirm weight and CBM on /insights/weight-or-cube/ before you assume FCL, then ask on /lanes/china-to-usa/
  • Canada uses different gateways and inland legs; see /lanes/china-to-canada/ when the destination is not the lower 48

Port congestion

  • Shanghai vessel waiting time fell from 97 hours in week 38 to 38 hours in week 42 on Drewry’s port data
  • Suez Canal containership transits edged up from 54 in week 41 to 55 in week 42
  • Easier waits at Shanghai do not automatically mean a lower spot rate; capacity on the sailing still sets the quote

Other indices this week

  • SCFI composite 3,681.34 on 23 October versus 3,679.58 on 16 October; Europe $2,351 per TEU (+16), Mediterranean $3,255 per TEU (+5), US West Coast $7,521 per FEU (−4), US East Coast $10,388 per FEU (−17), Southeast Asia $1,146 per TEU (−10)
  • Xeneta market-average spot per 40-foot: Far East–USWC $8,311 (+0.2%), USEC $11,525 (+0.2%), North Europe $3,698 (+6.8%), Med $4,442 (+5.8%)
  • Baltic FBX composite moved from 3,577 to 3,513; Asia–USEC $10,754 to $9,927; Asia–North Europe $3,692 to $3,516; Asia–Med $4,001 to $4,421
  • The publishers disagree this week. Treat any index as dated context and ask for a quote with a validity date on /quote/

Checklist before you book

  • Europe cargo sailing after 1 November: ask whether the rate is pre- or post-FAK, what validity date applies, and whether blank sailings affect your week
  • Send cargo-ready date, load port, and destination port; compare the ready date to announced blank sailings rather than assuming weekly capacity is unchanged
  • Request the quote in writing with rate validity and surcharges named; prepaid freight only—do not assume freight collect is available
  • If the box must arrive before Chinese New Year 2027, read /insights/china-new-year-2027/ and quote in November or December while pre-holiday sailings still exist
  • Oceania and Southeast Asia moves use different port pairs; use /lanes/china-to-australia/, /lanes/china-to-new-zealand/, and /lanes/china-to-singapore/ for planning windows, then quote the actual gateway

Questions shippers ask

What was the Drewry World Container Index on 22 October 2026?

Drewry’s composite World Container Index was $4,585 per 40-foot container, up 2% week on week—the highest in 15 weeks. Named lanes that day included Shanghai–Los Angeles $8,007, Shanghai–New York $10,166, Shanghai–Rotterdam $3,632, and Shanghai–Genoa $4,152. Those are Drewry’s published figures, not a Yihang booking rate.

Should I book Asia–Europe cargo before 1 November?

If the cargo is ready and the sailing fits, ask for a rate with the validity date before the announced 1 November FAK window. Analyst commentary this week doubts the full increase will hold, while Drewry expects a slight rise next week on tighter capacity. Send the ready date and ports; the reply names what applies to your week—not the index.

Can I book the Drewry number?

No. It is a market index for a 40-foot container on named routes, published by Drewry for 22 October 2026. Your file has a commodity, a weight, a port, and a week. The desk quotes that on /quote/.

How do Drewry, SCFI, Xeneta and FBX differ this week?

They use different lanes, units (TEU vs 40-foot), and sampling. This week Drewry’s composite rose 2% while SCFI’s composite was nearly flat and FBX’s composite fell; Xeneta’s US lanes ticked up slightly while it expects US trades to soften later in 2026. None of those numbers is a booking rate—get a dated quote for your port pair.

Where are previous weeks?

All weekly Drewry WCI notes for China lanes are listed on /insights/container-freight-rate-index/, including 15 October and 8 October. Each note keeps the figures for its own date.
