General trade: manufacturing, home, consumer goods

Canton Fair

The Canton Fair runs twice a year at the Canton Fair Complex in Guangzhou, in three phases each session. Most foreign visitors are buyers, so the freight question usually comes after the fair: samples and first orders from several suppliers, collected into one shipment and sent home by air, LCL, or a full container. Yihang Shipping arranges pickup from the suppliers, China export clearance on its AEO file, and the international leg. Exhibits for the import pavilion are a different file. Their customs runs through the pavilion’s appointed exhibit carrier.

Planning Canton Fair

  • Samples from several suppliers: one receiving point, one count with photos, then one shipment. For one small box, a courier can still be cheaper.
  • Orders: the supplier’s incoterm decides who books. On FOB, the buyer’s forwarder books from the port. On EXW, pickup and export clearance are also on the buyer side.
  • Batteries, liquids, powders, and magnets need their documents before any carrier accepts them.
  • Import-pavilion exhibits enter on temporary admission and cannot be sold on the floor. A piece that stays is converted to a formal import through the pavilion’s appointed carrier.

Customs in China

  • China accepts the ATA carnet for exhibitions and fairs. The carnet must be in English, with the purpose marked as exhibition.
  • For freight, the China customs broker registers the carnet electronically with CCPIT before the import declaration.
  • Without a carnet, exhibits enter as temporary imports with a deposit or guarantee, and must leave or be converted within the time allowed.
  • Wooden packing needs a valid IPPC mark. Without it, or without a non-wood packaging declaration, customs can destroy the goods or order them back.
  • Temporarily imported exhibits cannot be sold on the floor. A piece that stays becomes a formal import with duty and VAT.

Questions exhibitors ask

How do I ship samples home from the Canton Fair?

One compact sample from one supplier usually travels best by courier. Samples from several suppliers can be delivered to one receiving point, counted, photographed, and sent together by air or LCL. Ask for both prices: the handling of a consolidation can cancel the saving on a small lot.

Can you collect from suppliers outside Guangzhou?

Yes. Suppliers anywhere in China can deliver to the consolidation point, or Yihang can arrange the pickup. The quote names the receiving warehouse, the cut-off for the last supplier, and the sailing or flight.

I am exhibiting in the import pavilion. Can you clear my exhibits?

The import pavilion routes exhibit customs, in and out, through its appointed exhibit carrier. Yihang can move the goods to China and hand them over, or take them onward after the fair. The pavilion’s carrier files the temporary admission and the write-off. The quote says which part is whose.
