Construction, mining, and building-material machinery

bauma Munich

bauma 2028 runs April 3–9 at the Trade Fair Center Messe München. It is the largest construction-machinery fair, held every three years, and exhibitors from China ship excavators, cranes, mining machines, components, and stands. Big machines travel on flat racks or as breakbulk to Hamburg, Bremerhaven, or Antwerp, then by road to Munich with permits. Since June 1, 2026, the EU accepts only the digital eATA carnet. Yihang Shipping already ships oversized equipment from China and plans the exhibit back from the outdoor move-in day.

bauma Munich
Dates April 3–9, 2028
Where Trade Fair Center Messe München
Cycle Every three years, April
Sector Construction, mining, and building-material machinery
Mode Planning window When it fits
Ocean FCL Often about four to six weeks port to port from East China to Hamburg, Bremerhaven, or Rotterdam. Then truck to the fair. Dalian adds a feeder. Stands and machines when the build date allows a sailing.
China–Europe rail Where rail replaces the sea route, up to about 40% shorter than ocean. A planning comparison, not a booked transit. When the vessel misses the build day and air is the wrong tool.
Air freight A few days airport to airport into Frankfurt or Munich once the flight is confirmed. Samples, graphics, and late pieces.

Windows are for planning. They are not a Yihang booking.

Planning bauma Munich

  • Large machines: flat rack, open top, or breakbulk. Dimensions and weight come before the sailing.
  • The road leg from the North Sea port to Munich needs oversized-transport permits. Plan it with the fair’s outdoor move-in day.
  • eATA only in the EU since June 1, 2026. Machines sold at the fair are a normal EU import.
  • bauma happens every three years and books carriers early. Start the plan 9–12 months out.

Customs in Germany and the EU

  • Since June 1, 2026, EU customs accept only the digital eATA carnet. Paper carnets are no longer the plan for Germany, the UK, Switzerland, or Norway.
  • Goods sold at the fair, giveaways, and consumables are cleared as a normal import with import VAT.
  • German fairgrounds route the last metres through on-site forwarders the fair appoints. The quote names the handover point.

Questions exhibitors ask

How early should bauma cargo be planned?

For oversized machines, 9–12 months out: the box type, the sailing, road permits in Germany, and the outdoor move-in day all have to line up. The cargo-ready date usually falls before Chinese New Year.

Can a machine be sold at bauma and stay in Europe?

Yes, as a normal EU import with duty and import VAT. If a sale is likely, plan the file for it, and keep the rest on the eATA carnet.

Can you deliver to the outdoor stand?

The quote can include delivery to Messe München and the handover to the fair’s appointed on-site forwarder or crane contractor. The handover point is written on the quote.
